healthy_eatingIf you are trying to lose pregnancy weight, you might actually look forward to your weigh ins.
But if the scales are not working in your favour (and you’ve checked the batteries) it can really zap your motivation to see the numbers stay the same or even go up.
The good news is that there are reasons for this, and lots that you can do to ensure that the scales keep moving in the right direction for your pregnancy weight loss.

You’re letting old habits sneak back in

When you have been on a healthy eating plan for some time, and are seeing results, it be easy to get a little more relaxed.
Perhaps you’ve gone back to full cream lattes, or adding a little sugar to your tea, or saying yes more often to that biscuit at afternoon tea.
Every little bit adds up, so see if reigning in your little extras across the day is enough to help you make a change for the better.

Your portion sizes are creeping up

Another thing that could be happening is slipping back into the habit of bigger portions.
So often we serve up our main meal and make the portion the same for ourselves and our partner (who may be several kilograms heavier and a lot taller, and therefore needs more calories).
Try to remember to serve yourself a smaller portion (use a smaller plate if that helps) and bulk up your plate with leafy greens, steamed veg or salad.
We’ve got some tips on portion control here.

Your exercise routine is a bit too…routine

Even if you are exercising regularly it doesn’t take long for the body to become used to the routine.
So if you are doing the same type of exercise each week, it might be time to shake things up a little bit. Try alternating your walks with some 1 minute sprints. Attend a fitness class or try our Exercise DVD. Go for a swim for a change.
Try to always keep your body guessing, so that it doesn’t get stuck in a rut which can lead to a weight loss plateau.

You could be building muscle

As you begin doing exercise and light weight bearing exercise you will gain lean muscle tissue, a substance which is denser than fat. So you may actually see the number on the scales increase. Even though the scale may not be moving, it doesn’t mean that you’re not getting smaller. Muscle is more dense than fat, so it takes up less space. You can be in a smaller pants size and not be any lighter on the scale – and this is why we advise to take measurements each week as well as weighing yourself.

It is also a good point to note that this extra lean muscle tissue has added benefits too – not only will you appear smaller, but muscle will help raise your metabolism too which helps to burn more fat – win win!

Have a look at Jess’s story here too which illustrates this point and see her picture below

Other things you can try:

  • Stop weighing yourself for a whole week (or month if you can)

Being too focused on the numbers on the scales means that you are less focused on the process of eating well and moving more.
Focus on being healthy instead of how much you weigh, and quite often you will find that weight loss is a natural result.

  • Remember to check your measurements

When you are toning up, you can often see a more positive result from your body measurements instead of the scale.
Remember to record your measurements so that you can see the trend and feel motivated when you see your hard work paying off.

  • Think about how you are feeling

Again, it’s important not to let a number on the scale determine whether you have been ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and therefore how you feel.
Think about how you feel today compared to when you first began your weight loss journey.
Are you feeling more positive about life? Are you fitter than you used to be? Do you feel as though your knowledge about healthy food and cooking has improved?
These are all really positive things, so remember to give yourself a pat on the back when you think about how far you have come.

  • Check out your ‘before’ photo

Another quick pick me up option is to take a current photo and compare it to your ‘before’ photo that you took when you began the Lose Baby Weight plans.
Notice things like your tummy size, your thighs, your arms, your face – and you will most likely see that there is a positive difference compared to where you were when you started.
And you should be proud of yourself for that.
