A lot of the things I eat now, I would have never touched before I started my Healthy Mummy journey just because of amount of sugar (or lack thereof!) Taste is a MASSIVE part of food for both us and our kids so finding healthy and natural alternatives is a huge plus! I do a lot of baking for myself and my kids, it makes snack time so quick and easy as well as super yummy!
And it really doesn’t feel like you are missing out on anything if you are able to make a healthier alternative to choc chip cookies, caramel slice, chocolate balls and there are HEAPS of ideas/healthy swaps in the Guilt Free Cookbook.  I use a lot of naturally sweet ingredients in my cooking/baking

Naturally Sweet Swaps

  • Unsweetened Apple Sauce
  • Grated Apple/Carrot
  • Mashed Banana (very well mashed, I am not the biggest banana fan at all)
  • Honey
  • Pitted Dates
  • Nuts (weird I know, but most nuts have a slightly sweet flavour to them, plus they are adding healthy fats and protein to your diet)
  • Coconut Syrup
  • Maple Syrup

Keep in mind that the less packaged foods we use and consume the better! Use foods in its natural forms (fruit and veggies) to naturally sweeten your recipes.
If you’re totally sceptical or haven’t found a natural sweetener that appeals to you and your recipe, try swapping for brown sugar (it is less processed the regular white sugar) or coconut sugar.  I’ve also noticed that in some recipes I am able to reduce the sugar down by half and it still tastes absolutely awesome. If the recipe calls for ½ cup sugar, try using ¼ cup for example. Give it a go! You won’t even notice! Remember the idea is to REDUCE sugar not to cut it out altogether!

I leave you with this challenge…

Find your favourite recipe and either reduce the amount of sugar in it or try using a naturally sweet alternative!
Let me know how you go
