If you’re a mum trying to lose pregnancy weight, you might be worried that all this healthy eating could end up costing you a lot more than you normally like to spend at the supermarket.
So many commercial foods that are available are quite cheap – but there is a big difference between these and something that you’ve made yourself.
Many don’t contain as much fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals compared to a home made version.
And in the long run, making your own meals from scratch (when you can) could end up saving you money rather than costing you more.
And all our meals on our 28 Day Challenge (and July is the budget themed challenge too) which we have made HIGH VALUE are all made from scratch and are a GREAT way to educate you how it is possible to cook healthy, family friendly food – without costing a fortune.
You can join the challenge here and you can also view an example of one of the recipes from the challenge here too.
Make your own healthy snacks
These can be for you as well as for the little people in your life.
Things like healthy dips, muffins, fruit breads, and protein balls can be prepared once a week and used each day to fill hungry bellies.
By avoiding snacks from cafes and food courts you are reducing costs as well as calories.
Cook double batches and freeze
This helps you out when you might normally reach for a take away. If you know Fridays are hectic, pull out a frozen meal (we love things like bolognese or a curry) and let it defrost in the fridge to enjoy that night.

Stick to what’s in season or on sale
Sure you might love leeks or strawberries but if they are not in season you can end up spending too much on them.
Look around at what foods are on sale and you will see that most likely it is what is in season at the time.
Pumpkin going cheap? Why not pop pumpkin soup on the menu this week. Broccoli on sale? Chop it up and use it in a stir fry – or even freeze it to use later on.
Enjoy the cheaper cuts of meat
Things like shanks, chuck steak, mince, shin and shoulder are all great cuts of meat to use in slow cooking.
Whether that’s in a slow cooker (we love the Slow Cooked Beef with Sweet Potato and Peanut Sauce – yum) or just in a low oven, long slow cooking brings out the flavour of cheaper cuts.
Some of our other slow faves include this Lamb Biryani and this delicious Minestrone Soup.
Reduce your meat intake
Another great way to save money is to enjoy a few vegetarian meals each week. Ensure you are still adding plenty of quality protein such as chickpeas, feta, eggs and nuts so that you feel full and satisfied after your meal.
Here are a couple of our family friendly vegetarian options:
Make one night a week cheap and cheerful
Whether it’s a big pot of soup, scrambled eggs on toast, or a vegetarian chilli – having a night each week where you specifically make something economical can be a great way to save your pennies.
