If you’re a fan of sweet chilli sauce, you might be shocked to read these statistics.
In every tablespoon there is:
- 62 calories
- More than 3 teaspoons of sugar, and
- 330mg of sodium.
So while it is a delicious accompaniment to a stir fry, burger or home made lasagne it is also not doing you too many favours if you are trying to lose weight.
So today we have a delicious home made sweet chilli sauce recipe that we think tastes great. And the best part? It only contains around 16 calories per tablespoon!
Use less chilli if you don’t like it too hot, or leave some chilli seeds in if you like it extra spicy.

- 3 small red chillis, de-seeded and finely chopped
- 2 red capsicums, de-seeded and cut into cubes
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, chopped

- Juice of one lemon (or you can use a lime)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
- Place all ingredients in a blender for 30 seconds on high speed.
- Place into a glass jar and keep refrigerated for up to a week.
- Makes around 1 cup of sauce. Calories per tbsp: 16.
Serving suggestions:
- Dollop on some home made chicken burgers
- Mix with some sour cream or yoghurt and use as a dipping sauce with calamari
