Add a teaspoon of chia seeds

For an extra fibre boost, chia seeds are a great add-in. They swell up when placed in liquid and help to keep your tummy fuller while also keeping you regular. Try this Green Chia Smoothie.

Add a tablespoon of yoghurt

Yoghurt contains probiotics, which can assist with positive gut health. You can read which is the best plain yoghurt to buy here.

Add a pinch of turmeric

For a natural anti-inflammatory, you can’t beat turmeric. Raid the spice cupboard and sprinkle this in as the curcumin in turmeric can help treat inflammation and is as powerful as medication.

Add 6 cashews

Again the healthy fats from nuts are great for your heart, as they can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease. They also add a creamy boost to your drink.

Add a handful of ice

Add some bulk and the chill factor to your smoothie by using ice as a staple ingredient for your Healthy Mummy Smoothies.

Add a sprinkling of cinnamon

For a natural sweetener you can’t go past cinnamon. It works well with pear or banana, and can help to lower your blood sugar levels, and even reduces your risk of heart disease.

Add 6 almonds

Almonds give you the goodness of good fats for heart health. But the best part is this smoothie tastes like a Ferrero Rocher!

Add a handful of baby spinach

Now don’t worry, your smoothie will NOT taste like grass! The great thing about baby spinach is that it packs in loads of health benefits (such as fibre, to keep you regular) while also having a very mild flavour.

Add some fresh ginger

You can aid digestion by regularly eating ginger. It also gives you a lovely warmth and tastes great with banana and oats.

Add a tablespoon of melted coconut oil

The health benefits are numerous (it can help support heart health and lower cholesterol for a start), and it also adds a natural sweetness to your smoothie.

Add ¼ avocado

Not only will this add a lovely creamy texture to your Healthy Mummy Smoothie, but you’ll also enjoy the benefits of the good fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals that all come from the humble avo. Try this Kiwi, Spinach and Avocado Smoothie.

Add some more veggies

Try adding cooked vegetables to your smoothie for a hint of extra sweetness (as well as the health benefits of course). Think carrots, sweet potato, zucchini, or beetroot. Try this Pear and Zucchini Smoothie.

Add a teaspoon of nut butter

A little flavour bomb like some 100% nut butter turns your smoothie into a Snickers or a Picnic!

Add half a bunch of mint

Not only does mint taste great (especially with fresh pineapple), you can also use the mint to assist with your digestion.

unspecified-3Add a tablespoon of cottage cheese or ricotta

Yet another ingredient to give you the lovely creamy mouth feel (that you normally find in a thickshake made with ice cream). These will give you an extra protein boost (need more energy mama?) as well as calcium for strong bones.

Use frozen fruit instead of fresh

This will give your smoothie a rich creamy flavour but will also make it a nice cool temperature. It’s amazing the difference a frozen banana makes instead of a fresh one – once you try it you’ll never go back. And it’s a great way to avoid throwing out a very over ripe banana. We also love using frozen berries as it means you will never have to worry about using berries before they go bad.

What else?

We would tell you to add some natural protein powder for energy and fullness, fenugreek to support breastfeeding, flaxseed or pumpkin seeds for fibre and good fats, or psyllium husks for extra fibre, but the good news is that the Healthy Mummy Smoothie already contains those ingredients!
And if you are pregnant, we also have a specially made pregnancy smoothie that is full of ingredients to support you and your baby’s development.
