Hey beautiful Mummys
Tasheena here and I am a self proclaimed Coffee addict! I have lost over 43kgs following the Lose Baby Weight Plans and 28 Day Challenges for the last 20 months, I slowly gave up my Diet Coke addiction and happy to say that stuff tastes fowl now and I’m so glad I gave it up.
Meanwhile giving up the Diet Coke I took on a new addiction and that was COFFEE! Too much coffee, I am talking anywhere from 5-10 cups a day.

So I have decided to give up Coffee and you can join too! I am not saying that coffee is bad but drinking excessive amounts over long periods of time is not good for your health and that is why I am reducing my intake and hoping to switch to herbal tea for a more healthier alternative.

Why Too Much Coffee Is Bad?

  • Drinking too much Coffee can leave you dehydrated.
  • Too much can cause lethargy, leaving you more tired than you already are.
  • Drinking coffee over long periods of time has been known to cause added stress, anxiety and moodiness. You can see the pro’s and con’s of drinking coffee here.
  •  Has been known to affect the cortisol stress hormone.
  • Plays havoc with your blood sugar.

Alternatives to Drinking Coffee?

Energy boosting Teas

Energy Boosting Drinks

  • Beetroot juice as it is high in iron
  • Coconut water and a teaspoon of spirulina
  • Healthy Mummy Smoothies
  • Maca powder with almond milk

Tips On Reducing Coffee?

  • Use the Cut Down Coffee Challenge Chart to slowly cut down on coffees.
  • Swap normal coffee for decaf coffee to help reduce the caffeine intake.
  • When feeling the urge for another coffee before the next one is due, have an extra herbal tea or water.
  • When out at a cafe order a decaf latte or a herbal/tea

Breastfeeding Mums & Teas

Many new mothers are wary of their food and drink intake, especially when they’re breastfeeding. Herbal teas may be safe to drink when you’re not pregnant or nursing, but some of the ingredients in herbal tea such as chamomile, comfrey, mugwort and sage can actually induce or cause miscarriage.

However, teas made from foods considered safe to eat during pregnancy, such as ginger and mint and caffeine free teas (green, black and white – get caffeine free variants – Tetley do a great caffeine free range) are thought to still be safe to consume during pregnancy and beyond. It’s important to remember that herbs are actually drugs, and in tea, the herbs are brewed in much larger quantities compared to when you use them in cooking.

If you are breastfeeding we suggest limiting your decaffeinated green tea consumption to 2-3 cups a day as excessive amounts are thought to interfere with iron absorption.

Therefore, before you begin any herbal tea regimen, whether you are pregnant, nursing or not, you should always seek the advice of your primary care physician before beginning to drink the teas to ensure that they won’t interfere with your current health status or any medication you may be taking.
