Em Rusciano hit the headlines last week after her post for news.com.au entitled ‘Admit it: Being a stay at home mother sucks a lot of the time’ hit the interwebs.
She opened with:“Being a Stay at Home Mother… is hands down the most thankless, exhausting, soul-sucking job there is!”
It’s no surprise really that feathers were ruffled from both SAHM and working mothers alike.
Em goes on to explain that she’s not trying to fuel the ‘us vs them’ mummy wars, but instead diffuses the debate once and for all. She says, “it doesn’t matter if you’re a working mother or a stay at home one, we’re all in the arena together. No-one has it any better or any worse, let’s be honest when you’re doing one of those things, you usually wish you were doing the other anyway.”
The women who join the Healthy Mummy 28 day weight loss challenges come from all walks of life. SAHM’s, work at home mums, part time working mothers, full time working mothers.. ….and probably a bunch of other configurations that we might not know about but are equally impressive.
The one thing that unites these mums is their desire to be the best, healthiest versions of themselves. It’s a common goal that is shared regardless of whether you leave the house at 7am for the office or are packed in with the kids all day long.
With that in mind, we’ve pulled together 10 things that are great about being a SAHM and the 10 that rock about being a part of the working world.
10 things we love about being a SAHM
- Saying sayonara to having to ever wear heels again (unless you enjoy wearing them in which case, kudos to you super stylish mama!)
- PJ’s being a legitimate clothing option at any time of the day.
- The ability to whip up a healthy lunch in your own kitchen.
- Being able to make it to school concerts, assemblies and sports carnivals.
- Rainy afternoons cuddled up on the couch watching movies (until everyone goes a bit stir crazy anyway!).
- Putting your kids to bed at night and knowing that you’ve made it through another day and your child feels happy, safe and loved.
- Watching your child master a new skill that you’ve watched them struggle with each and every day for the last week/month.
- Reporting to no one (but your minions who may well be tougher than any boss you’ve ever had).
- Managing the school holidays without the frantic juggle to find childcare or out of school activities.
- Seeing everyday just how amazing your kids truly are.
10 things that rock about working
- Hot coffee (or tea). That deserves to be repeated. Hot coffee (or tea).
- Wearing a fabulous outfit that is completely unsuitable for the park and child wrangling, and knowing you can get away with it because you’ll be with adults all day.
- Feeling like you’re making a financial contribution to your family.
- Having other adults to chat to everyday.
- Using the more cerebral parts of your brain and drawing on skills you may have spent years learning
- Lunchbreaks!
- Your time management and organisation skills hit the stratosphere when juggling work and home life.
- Recognition for a job well done (something that isn’t always forthcoming from a toddler!).
- Sharing the parenting load with your partner, especially pick-ups, drop offs and other daycare, pre-school, school activities.
- Seeing everyday just how amazing your kids truly are.
