Motivating mum Barbara Dixion has been following the Lose Baby Weight healthy eating plans and today she is sharing her advice on how to have better digestion and how it can aid in your weightloss.digestion_blog
“I’m a physiologist (lungs not stomachs) and have always been interested in digestion.
There is a very simple change you can make to have better digestion, better health and weightloss and all starting at your next meal.

Chew your food

Just like our mothers told us when we are rushing out to play. Well lots of us are still rushing and eat too quickly. It is so important to chew your food properly for several reasons.

  • Chewing signals to the digestive organs that food is on its way and the stomach begins to produce acid required for digestion.
  • When you chew your food it gets broken down into smaller parts and comes into contact with more saliva which contains important enzymes that begin breaking down the food before it reaches the stomach.
  • Proteins get broken down into amino acids which the body uses for repair. I’m sure lots of us have marvelled at blenders that say they release all these fantastic nutrients from food, well we have the ability to do that inside our own bodies if we chew our food and have healthy digestive tracts –  after all that’s what our teeth are designed for it would be a shame not to use them! It’s also part of the reason that the healthy mummy smoothie work so well as our blenders mimic chewing.
  • Chewing your food properly at meal times takes a little longer but this is a win-win as it takes some time for the brain to get the message that the stomach is full. Taking longer to eat will make it less likely that you will overeat.

So how much should we chew?

Well the good news is being conscious of chewing will automatically make you slow down and chew more. Numbers have been promoted in various articles averaging around 30 times.
I’m not advocating counting chews every mouthful but just as an experiment you could count and I think most people are having 5-8 chews and down the hatch!
If you keep in your mind that you should be liquefying food in the mouth just like a blender does then you will start to get closer to how we should be breaking down food to release nutrients.
Happy chewing!!”
