5 tips to start running

Hi I’m Caren, Healthy Mummy Consultant for the Hills District, Sydney!
In my younger days I could eat what I wanted, didn’t put on weight, and didn’t worry about food or exercise.
The thought of running?! HA! I was one of those people, if you saw me running, you should be running too, because something must be chasing me! No, I’d rather take my latte and rom-com novel instead thank you very much!
Cue baby one and my body went haywire! During my first pregnancy I put on 25 kg. I lost an initial 10 kg and then the rest just wouldn’t budge. After umming and ahing for months I took the Healthy Mummy plunge and never looked back. I lost my baby weight, had another baby, lost it again and craziest if all? I now LOVE running! As in super-duper – go to bed early on a Friday night so I can get up and do Park Run early Saturday morning – CRAZY!
Healthy Mummy has taught me a complete lifestyle change. It’s not just food, but exercise too, for a healthy mind, body and soul.   5 tips to help you start running
Running soothes me and calms the crazy in my mind. It makes me feel like me again. I can compete against myself and it blows my mind how I keep improving each week and bettering my times.
If you’ve thought about getting into running, here are my Top Tips for started:

1. Break it down

Don’t wake up and decide you are going to run 5km! You will probably end up 500m in, coughing and spluttering and end up going home with your tail between your legs vowing never to do it again! Start with short run/walk break downs and slowly build it up.

2. Get an APP

There are lots of running apps available such as the one I started with, C25K (Couch to 5km). These types of Apps teach you how to build up your distance and endurance gradually.

3. STRETCH

Make sure you warm up, cool down and have a good stretch so you don’t injure yourself and give up before you’ve even started.

4. PACE

Pace is SO important! If you storm out at a 4 minute per km pace you might last 1km if you are lucky! If you find a comfortable pace you can maintain, you will be able to last longer and not have to stop so soon to catch your breath.

5. Don’t take it too seriously

Yes, I love to try and improve each time I hit the pavement, but it is not always about beating your PB! Remember to breathe, enjoy the freedom, clear your mind and be proud that no matter if you are doing 2km or 20km, you are getting out there and improving your health and wellbeing, and those very impressionable little eyes are watching Mummy setting an incredible example.
I love spreading the Healthy Mummy word to anyone who will listen, that’s why I became a Healthy Mummy Consultant. Healthy Mummy changed my life and I love seeing that just a few small changes can change someone else’s life too!
If you haven’t gotten on board yet then jump on the Healthy Mummy train with me and discover a brand new happy, healthy you!

It is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!!!!!!
I’m a busy mum of three boys 5 and under. My partner works away so it’s my children and I by ourselves most of the time. So my time is very limited and I thought that the Challenge would be exactly that – a challenge.
BUT all the meals are already planned out for me, they take 10min max to prepare and even less time to eat them because they are soooooo delish that they don’t last long on my plate.
Even my fussy eating children love them!!!”
