It’s not until you become a parent that you realise why your own parentals used to get so cranky when you fought with your siblings – it’s SO freaking annoying! Children will fight about anything and everything from getting a ‘funny look’ from their sister to who is first to brush their teeth!
No matter what we do as parents it’s fact of life that siblings will fight with each other, and not just with words, sometimes it’s gets physical. And don’t even get me started on boys and play fighting – #groan!
Here’s 10 things parents know about having kids who fight with each other like cats and dogs:
1. The second you head for the shower or bathroom for a few minutes peace you can guarantee one of your kids will rock up, often with tears in their eyes, to complain about something their sibling did.
2. Don’t feel bad if you lock yourself in the bathroom so your kids can’t come in and complain about an ongoing fight, they will be waiting outside the door to complain as soon as you slide it open.
3. Your kids will usually have the biggest fight when you’re out at dinner and trying to pretend you’re a nice, normal, happy family.
4. Getting involved in a fight isn’t always the best move, because usually you don’t get both sides of the story until it’s too late and you’ve punished the wrong child.
5. If you use your phone to record your kids having hissy fits at each other and play it back to them it will either make them realise they look like a pork chop or they’ll love themselves sick and want you to replay it over and over again.
6. Often you’ll be so fed up with squabbling children you’ll hide away from them and test Darwin’s survival of the fittest theory – often with surprising results.
7. Most fights start over the most trivial and stupid things such as someone taking a toy that another child was about to play with but wasn’t actually playing with at the time.
8. A play fight usually ends in tears because someone almost always gets hurt and then it’s usually game on for all and sundry.
9. When nasty words don’t seem to get the message across many kids will head straight to their sibling bedroom to destroy a prized possession or something of value.
10. The amount of times you’ve tried to negotiate or talk down your fighting children is so high that you’re almost consider an official police negotiator.
Bonus thing you know:
You’ve said one of the following things more than a dozen times: ‘Yes well life isn’t fair’ or ‘I don’t care who started it’ ‘I will take away your screens for the rest of your life’ or ‘why can’t you just be nice to each other?’.
