weight_loss_goalsOne of the most difficult parts in starting a new weight loss plan is deciding on some sensible post pregnancy weight loss goals. You may want to get into your pre pregnancy clothes. You may want to lose your baby weight.
You might want to get back to the weight that you were when you were 20, or you might want to weigh the number on the scale that you’ve always wanted to be.
You might also want to lose 10% of your weight for health – or you might prefer to a few kilos to lose a dress size. But before you start out on your weight loss regime, it’s important to understand what exactly you are hoping to achieve.
Once you’ve figured out your exact weight loss goals, you can then work towards shifting some of those kilos. A healthy weight loss is between 0.5kg and 1kg per week, as this is a sustainable weight loss that won’t put too much pressure on your body. This level of weight loss is also easily maintainable in the long term, meaning that you can keep losing weight and more easily reach your goal.
5%
For health reasons, your first goal should be to lose 5% of your body weight. This is a small, manageable goal – but it will lower your cholesterol level, improve your blood sugar and reduce aches and pains. Depending on your starting weight, a weight loss of 5% could also mean that you are close to losing a whole dress size – which has to be a bonus!
10%
Following your 5% achievement, 10% is the next natural goal. Reaching 10% will give you even more benefits than reaching  5%. You will have lowered your risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases associated with obesity, you’ll have less aches and pains and you should find moving around that little bit easier. Losing 10% of your body weight will also mean that you can fit into old clothes and you’ll feel much more ready to keep going.
1kg at a time
After you’ve reached your initial goals, break down your end weight loss goal into little chunks of 1kg at a time. Smaller goals are much easier to deal with than one large goal – for example, if you have over 30kg to lose, it can feel like an absolutely impossible task. But break this down into 1kg – 2kg at a time and you’ll find that you can lose the weight – one step at a time.
Reward yourself each time you lose 1kg -2kg – but not with food or a big blowout, with something non-food related such as getting a manicure or pedicure, or even just be buying yourself a new book. Give yourself something to look forward to and you’ll have an extra incentive to lose the weight – aside from looking better and feeling better.

But How Much Should I Lose?

Your ideal body weight depends entirely on your starting weight, your age, your sex and your health. Some people will always weigh more than others. Some people will always be naturally slim. How much you should weigh as well as your weight loss goals will depend on a number of things, but to work out your ideal range, you need to know your BMI. You can work yours out here.
Remember that to lose weight you shouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself. Everyone has off days and everyone will slip sometimes. The weight will come off – just give it time!
