For a classic healthy eating family meal, you can’t beat meatballs.
Served with a crispy salad or some pasta, they are sure to be a hit.
This healthy eating recipe uses simple, fresh ingredients to create a hearty and wholesome dish for four people.
By allowing the meatballs to simmer slowly on the stovetop it gives time for the flavours to develop.
This dish also freezes well – just defrost in the fridge overnight.
Feel free to switch the herbs to whatever you have on hand – fresh parsley works well, as does mint or rosemary.


For the sauce:

  • 1 large brown onion, peeled and finely diced
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced chilli (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 500g tomato passata or plain pasta sauce
  • 400g tin of whole peeled tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the meatballs:

  • 400g lean beef mince
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup wholemeal breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup light milk
  • 3 tbsp fresh basil leaves, torn + extra to serve
  • ½ cup low fat feta, crumbled


  • Heat a large frying pan over med/high and add the oil.
  • Add the onion and the garlic and stir fry for 3-4 minutes.
  • Open the tin of whole peeled tomatoes and use a sharp knife to very roughly chop them.
  • Pour the passata and tomatoes into the pan and season to taste.
  • Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to simmer while you make the meatballs.
  • In a separate bowl, add all meatball ingredients and mix well.
  • Form the mixture into large meatballs, slightly bigger than a golf ball.
  • Pop the meatballs into the simmering sauce, increase the heat and bring to the boil.
  • Don’t worry that the sauce may not cover the meatballs.
  • Reduce the heat and cover the pan with the lid.
  • Cook for an hour, then turn over the meatballs carefully.
  • Cook for a further hour and a half, stirring carefully once during this time.
  • Sprinkle with extra basil leaves, to serve.
