Hi I’m Alex. I’m one the of the motivating mums for the 100 days to Summer countdown. I’ve lost 13.7kg from the Lose Baby Weight program.
It is a year since I realised that I needed to do something to lose weight.
I remember looking at the photos of me on our family holiday for my 30th birthday. I was disgusted at what I saw. I hated myself. I wanted to delete the photos forever but I couldn’t as it was my 30th!!
Instead I made a commitment to myself that I wouldn’t be the same size when I turned 31.
I joined Lose Baby Weight and the challenges. But I was continually failing at it all.

Why was I failing so miserably? Why couldn’t I lose the weight and keep it off? Because the goals I had set for myself weren’t realistic.
I needed to re-evaluate my goals. So I took a teacher’s approach to my goals. I needed to make SMART goals. What are SMART goals I hear you say? Well I have outlined below what they are and how you can change your goals to SMART goals. Please note that some of the words are interchangeable with other words with the same meaning or idea.
Specific
What EXACTLY do you want to achieve (who, what, where, when, why, how)?
Measureable
How will you know when you’ve achieved the goal? Can you track your progress and measure the outcome?
Attainable/achievable
Do you have what you need to achieve this goal? Is it possible for you to achieve this goal? The goal should be challenging but within your ability to reach.
Realistic
Are you able to actually accomplish this goal? What obstacles do you need to overcome? Can you visualise the results? You need to truly believe you can reach the goal. Are you willing, do you have the talent and are you committed to making it happen?
Timely
How much time do you have to complete the goal? Set some ‘by when’ dates that you can target for completion or to measure your progress.
Here’s an example of one of my goals
I will walk 12,000 steps every day this week.
Specific
Rather than simply saying, “I’m going to walk more,” I’ve specified how many steps I’ll walk.
Measurable
My FitBit will track the steps I take, so I’ll be able to clearly know when I’ve succeeded.
Attainable
Since I’m already walking 10,000 steps every day, bumping it up a bit should be manageable. To walk to extra 2000 steps I will need to walk to and home from work or 20 minutes extra on the treadmill each day.
Realistic
12,000 steps is very realistic, I can see myself walking to extra steps and I believe I can truly do it. I am willing and committed to making this happen for my weight loss.
Timely
This is my goal for this week. Period. I can choose to pursue this goal again next week, or I can set a new goal.
