If you’re rushing about like a flea in a fit but not really achieving much except for a whole lot of stress and chaos, it might be time to consider cooling those jets and S.L.O.W.I.N.G down.
Chances are in the past 24 or 48 hours you’ve said one of the following; “hurry up and brush your teeth” or “quick we’re going to be late” or “hurry up and put your shoes on”.
Being a parent busy doesn’t always equate to being an efficient, organised or present parent. Our kids need us to let them be kids and just be in the moment. If you’re looking for some suggestions on how to slow down then here are some.
1. Schedule some unscheduled time
Taking a break from organised activities and just going with the flow can be hard thing for families to do when they’re so used having every hour of their lives scheduled. Try scheduling no activities together as a family, this will help kids develop physical skills without rules, free range if you will. You want them to try new things without worrying about whether they’re doing it right or not. Build a fort, visit the beach or go for a bike ride.
2. Dance to the sound of your own beat
Forget how many activities your friend’s kids are doing or how social other parents are, they’re not you and they aren’t living your life. Instead of ferrying your young kids to organised sports practice think outside the box and consider engaging older family members of neighbours to kick the ball around with your kids. Remember, just because everyone else goes out socialising two nights a week it doesn’t mean you need to.
3. Look at what’s really important
If you’ve committed to helping at your son’s school but it means you’ll be rushing about all day to make up the time then reconsider your priorities, maybe only offer to help every other week. If you’re stressing about how you’re going to get your work done it will be felt by everyone in the family as you get stressed and cranky over the small stuff.
4. Ask yourself some tough questions
You need to ask why you are so busy, who are you trying to please or what appearances are you trying to keep up. Be honest with yourself and you might realise you’re busy for all the wrong reasons. Try to remember you have nothing to prove and the only person you need to keep happy is yourself and your family.
5. Start saying no more often
Instead of instantly saying yes to everybody who asks something of you, tell them you’ll get back to them. Often we’re busy because we’re too busy pleasing people that don’t really deserved to be helped and certainly won’t do the same in return for you. This doesn’t mean to shirk all responsibilities, but just take a moment to consider whether you actually have the time and energy to do the task.
