If you’ve been working hard all week, squeezing in exercise where you can and focusing on healthy eating and your weight loss plan, there’s a good chance you deserve a little bit of pampering.
Trying to fit in (and afford!) a session at the salon isn’t always the easiest thing to do though, and on busy weekends, even popping into Priceline gets pushed to the bottom of the pile.
Taking time out for yourself however is of great importance, especially when you’re the chief caregiver for everyone else, 24/7.
Busy mum’s are often the least likely ones to fill up the wellbeing tank, though usually own the tanks that are running on empty. An at-home facial is the perfect antidote for that empty tank, and complements all the hard work you’re doing to lose weight.
Healthy eating and exercise both help the body to detoxify all the nasty stuff, which can sometimes leave skin feeling less than peachy. Congestion and the odd lump or bump or dry, parched patches are all common symptoms of a system rebooting itself.
Treating yourself to a mini-facial is a great way to soothe and rejuvenate, all at once.
The best bit? You don’t even need to leave the house. Your kitchen is home to a whole range of gorgeous ingredients, just begging to be mashed up and smeared onto clean skin.
Here are our favourite combinations. Enjoy!
DIY FACIAL TREATS
- Scrub up with banana – Combine the goodness of banana with soothing oats and milk and you’ve got the perfect treat for dry, dull skin. Mix two tsp. of mashed banana, 2 tsb. rolled oats, 1 tsp. milk and 1/2 teaspoon of honey in a small bowl. Massage into damp skin and leave for 2-5 minutes as a mask. Rinse off thoroughly and pat dry.
- Blast dead skin cells with baking soda – Baking soda and water (or a gentle face wash like Cetaphil) makes for a super gentle facial scrub, suitable even for sensitive skin. Simply mix 2 tbsp. of baking soda with a small amount of water or face wash to make a thick paste. Massage into skin while in the shower and rinse of thoroughly before following with your moisturiser.
- Hydrate a thirsty face with Avocado – We all know that avo’s are full of beneficial fats for our bodies. As it turns out, they are also fantastic for our faces. Mash a large, ripe avocado with 2 tsp. olive oil and apply to clean, dry skin. Leave the mask to dry on your face before rinsing off with warm water.
- Refresh tired skin with yoghurt – Yoghurt is a great way to cool and refresh hot or tired skin. Blend 2 tbsp. of natural or Greek yoghurt in a small bowl with a tsp. of honey. If you have any almond, grape seed or coconut oil on hand, add a couple of drops to the mix. Smooth onto clean skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with clean warm water.
- Treat blemishes with lemon – Lemon is a fantastic astringent for treating pimples and the scars they leave behind. Mix the juice of half a lemon with a beaten egg white to form a paste. Smooth onto clean skin and leave for as long as you can, ideally around 30-45 minutes before rinsing off. Just be mindful to not get any mixture into your eyes or mouth, due to the raw egg and stingy lemon!
