Stomach fat can be incredibly difficult to get rid of. There are two different types of fat within your body, subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.
Subcutaneous fat is the fat that is visible just beneath your skin – the fat that makes you appear fat. Visceral fat is the fat buried deep beneath the surface of the skin that is wrapped around your internal organs.
Visceral fat is the most dangerous type of fat as it is so close to your organs, and it’s the most important fat for you to target.
Your stomach contains both types of fat, and it’s especially important to remove visceral fat from your tummy area as there are so many important organs in that part of your body (you can read more about the two types of stomach fat here).
So how do you fight the fat? Well, there are some types of foods that can actively fight stomach fat – and if you combine a few of these foods into one meal, you can fight the flab whilst also eating delicious food.

Fat Fighting Breakfast

Oats topped with Citrus Fruits and Yoghurt
Oats are a brilliant fat fighting food, as a large proportion of their calories come from insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre will keep you fuller for longer, preventing you from overeating.
Foods that contain high levels of insoluble fibre are also known to aid fat burning and so adding oats to your breakfast or eating an oat-based breakfast is an excellent way to fight stomach fat (which is why our Healthy Mummy Smoothies are packed full of both types of fibre).
Citrus fruits that contain high levels of vitamin C are also excellent fat-fighting foods as they provide the body with energy, which will hike up your metabolism, and the vitamin C in them is known to burn fat.
Try topping your bowl of oats with some orange, grapefruit, or kiwi fruit. Low fat yoghurt contains bags of calcium, which is known to help you burn fat. You can also have one of our Healthy Mummy Smoothies that are packed full of fibre for the same effects.

Fat Fighting Lunch

Guacamole with Wholegrain Chips
Avocado is a surprising food that can help your fight against stomach fat. It is relatively high in calories and fat for a vegetable, but it contains mono-unsaturated fat, which is the best type of fat that can actually flatten your tummy.
Make a quick guacamole by mashing an avocado with some red onion and a red chili, which will pep up your metabolism, and a squeeze of citrus juice, which will help burn fat.
Wholegrains work to reduce belly fat in lots of ways and one study showed that when one group got all of their grain servings from wholegrains, they lost more fat from their stomach area than the other group. Serve your guacamole with some wholegrain chips or make them yourself by baking wholegrain tortillas cut into wedges in your oven.

Fat Fighting Dinner

Beany Veggie Chili
Beans are a great fat-fighting food as they contain tons of fibre. They are also very low in calories and fat. Sling a few tins of beans into your favourite veggie chili recipe for a belly-flattening effect and be sure to add plenty of fresh chili to boost your metabolism.
Serve the chili with some cauliflower instead of rice to cut out carbs and fat and to still keep you full. Cauliflower has a mild flavour and works well with most savoury foods – to use it as rice, simply process in a food processor until finely chopped, then fry in a little bit of olive oil until tender. To up the fat fighting effects of this meal even further, serve with some low calorie grated cheese for a dose of fat burning calcium.
