How to Lose Weight Over Winter

The average weight gain over the cooler months is around the 4kg mark which is a little bit depressing to say the least if you are trying to lose weight or following a weight loss plan!

And the reason for the weight gain is the amount of high fat comfort food we seem to be surrounded by in winter plus the lack of motivation to exercise as it is too cold to go outside.

So this winter are there some things you can do to prevent the weight gain and still follow your weight loss plan? The answer is a definitive YES!

The good news is there is lots of healthy comfort food you can eat and it doesn’t need to be full of fat and high in calories to taste good.  For over 35 healthy winter warming foods you can see our Winter Warmer Weight Loss Plan which also has a 7 day meal plan to show you how you can eat tasty foods and stay healthy.

With regard to it being cold outside there are lots of things you can do. I like to buy ear muffs as my I get earache in the cold weather and these work so well. I also like a good bobble hat, gloves and a warm coat – and if you wrap your baby or children up warmly too you will all enjoy getting out of the house and having a good walk.

But if it is raining or you just can’t face going outside there are heaps of things you can do at home that will burn energy and keep the weight off. Our top exercises you can do at home are:

  • Squats – these are the best single exercise you can do as they work the largest muscle group in your body and burn body fat. I like to do these when I am making a cup of tea or before dinner to get my heart rate up.
  • Stepping on a step – this is great for overall cardio and you can use the bottom of your stairs to do step ups for 5-10 minutes at a time
  • Do waist twisties – I love to do these as it really works the waist and stomach area and you can do them at any time during the day
  • March on the spot – and if you bring your leg up really high when you march you will really feel the muscle working
  • Do core work such as the plank and yoga moves in your front room
  • Dance with your kids or dance for your baby – pop on some nursery rhymes and jump around
  • Get an exercise DVD or a Wii fit

And if you need extra motivation this winter use our FREE weight loss members area which lets you track your weight loss, BMI, daily exercise and measurements
