Many people who are on a mission to lose weight can have a tendency to skip meals – and more often than not, they will forego breakfast.
After all, the fewer calories you eat, the more weight you lose – right? Wrong. To lose weight, you must eat enough calories and you must eat all of your meals – and the most important meal of all is breakfast.
Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast lose more weight than those who don’t – and 80% of people who lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off for more than a year say that they eat breakfast. What more excuse do you need to tuck in? And of course on the Lose Baby Weight plans we are big believers in starting the day with a healthy breakfast.

It Boosts Your Energy Levels

Perhaps the simplest reason for you to eat breakfast – and the reason why it is so useful in helping you to lose weight – is that it will help to keep you full until lunch. A healthy, balanced breakfast (such as The Healthy Mummy Smoothie) will set you up for the day and will help to prevent that mid-morning slump of energy.
On the other hand, no breakfast at all or just a coffee and a chocolate bar will not provide you with the energy that you need to function during the morning, making it much more likely that you’ll snack on unhealthy foods mid-morning to boost your energy levels – which in turn can lead to weight gain, seriously de-railing any potential weight loss plans.
Hands up – who often has an energy drink or a sugary coffee at 10am to keep them going until lunch? If this sounds like you, you definitely have to start eating breakfast!

It Boosts Your Metabolism

The right breakfast will boost your metabolism, which will help you to burn off calories more quickly and efficiently.
The more efficient that your body is at burning off calories, the easier you’ll find it to lose weight. If you have a slow and sluggish metabolism, your body will struggle to process the calories that you are putting into it – inevitably resulting in weight gain.
And the reason that eating breakfast is so important for your metabolism is that it effectively kick-starts it. When you’re asleep, your metabolism is too. It only starts again when you eat – and if you don’t eat until lunchtime, you could potentially have put your body into a “fasting state” for up to 18 hours.
This will cause a sluggish metabolism and your body will struggle to process the calories that you put into it throughout the rest of the day.

But I Don’t Want To Eat Too Many Calories

Eating breakfast doesn’t have to mean eating too many calories and if you choose the right food you will be healthier and aid weight loss
What Should I Eat?

And if you have more time to actually cook/make a breakfast every day then lean protein is a great choice for breakfast, so why not try grilled lean smoked bacon alongside an omelette made with 1 egg white and 1 whole egg?
Low-fat calcium is also important in the battle for weight loss – studies have shown that if you include 2 portions of low-fat calcium in your daily food intake, it can help to boost your weight loss.
Try low fat yoghurt topped with your favourite fruit and some whole grain breakfast cereal, or some low-fat ricotta spread on whole grain toast. Steer clear of overly processed sugary breakfast cereals and white bread, as these will release their energy very quickly, meaning that your blood sugar will spike and then dip – causing further cravings.
Try to include lean protein and whole grains in your breakfast, as well as some fresh fruit if possible to keep you full until lunch.
