Comparison is the thief of joy, truly it is, and the worst thing you can do as a new mum is compare yourself to others. While it might appear others are smashing it and you’re barely treading water, sometimes all is not what it seems.
We’re all on our own journey, so here’s why you need to stop comparing yourself to others RIGHT NOW!
1. You might make bad decisions
Just because your friend’s son sleeps for three-hours straight on his stomach, and boy are you jealous because your newborn only has 20-minute catnaps, it doesn’t mean this is the best option for you. Not only does stomach sleeping increase the chance of SIDS but what works for one baby doesn’t always work for all.
2. It’s making you unhappy
If you come away from a catch-up with a friend and feel bad about yourself it’s probably because you’re comparing yourself to how she looks or is feeling. While she could be happy, well rested and losing that baby weight fast, you might be exhausted, putting on weight and stressed. Don’t fall into that trap where you compare your weight-loss journey; your lives are completely different, as are your bodies.
Tip: You will ALWAYS find someone who you think is better off than you, stop it before it becomes a habit that’s hard to break.
3. There’s probably more to it
Quite often people only show their highlight reel to friends, especially on social media. There’s a lot of stuff going on the background that you’re not privy to, maybe they’ve got help or family who take the slack. Or perhaps they are miserable and project a happy outlook in order to maintain appearance or convince themselves they’re okay. Just be supportive but don’t be jealous, there’s always more to someone than meets the eye.
4. Your baby won’t thank you for it
Who cares if your friend’s baby put on 500grams in just one week or their son is walking at just nine months. You won’t be doing your child any favours by trying to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ – all kids reach milestones when they’re meant to. Comparing your baby’s milestones is a recipe for disaster, it can lead to feelings of inadequacies and is also stupidly annoying. Be happy for others and don’t get competitive about silly things.
5. You need to focus on you
If you’re too caught up on what other people are doing or achieving what you’re effectively doing is self sabotaging your own happiness and goals. Forget what others are doing and how they are doing it, put all that energy into creating the life you want for you and your family.
