What Makes Up The Pregnancy Weight Gain?

Of course we all gain different amounts of weight in pregnancy and although the average pregnancy weight gain is said to be 12-14kg some mums gain a lot more and some less and it all depends on your genetics, your level of exercise, any health issues in your pregnancy and your weight before pregnancy.

But a point to note is that a lot of the pregnancy gain is fluid, blood and of course the baby!

And because of this it is very common to lose a lot of the baby weight during the birth and in the week following the birth.

Below we have broken down the average weight loss associated with the birth which shows why you shouldn’t be obsessed with your weight in pregnancy or feel bad about how much you weigh – instead embrace your fantastic body at being able to carry and cocoon your baby.

What makes up the pregnancy weight?
  • 3.3kg – the average weight of a new born baby
  • 0.8kg – the amniotic fluid
  • 0.9kg – the muscle layer of your uterus which grown substantially
  • 0.7kg – the weight of the placenta
  • 1.2kg – extra blood volume
  • 0.4kg – the increased weight of your breasts
  • 1.2kg – extra fluid in your body
  • 4kg – of fat stores to help breastfeeding

Total – 12.5kg

So remember you need to gain weight in pregnancy and don’t stress about the weight gain – it is normal, natural and healthy!  And if you do want to lose weight post pregnancy don’t even think about it until you feel 100% ready (physically and emotionally) and make sure you do it by following a safe and sensible healthy eating plan
