Why You Need To Start Adding Ginger To Your Diet Today

If you follow this blog you will know that a) I am pregnant with my second bub and b) I have suffered from headaches all my life and that in pregnancy they go into overdrive – you can read about them here

Lose_baby_weightSo as I am well into my second trimester they have gone MENTAL – and it is because of the hormones being up and down and it is just soooo debilitating it is crazy.

And for the past two weeks I kid you not that I have had a crippling headache day and night. I have woken up all through the night in immense pain and have been alternating between frozen peas on my head to hot water bottles and when it gets so unbearable that I want to chop my head off I have to take panadol – which I just hate doing – and only takes the edge off it so I can function – doesn’t even get rid of it.

Anyway I have been having some acupuncture from a chinese medicine place which helps the pain temporarily and I was suggested to drink ginger tea to help with the inflammation caused by the headaches and to help circulation – but not tea bags, ginger tea made using real ginger in hot water.

So I have done this and it hasn’t helped as I guess it just wasn’t strong enough. But then one of the smoothie recipes of the week came in and Sarah Crisps’ recipe used ginger pieces in her smoothie (you can see the smoothie recipe here). And I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought about including ginger in the smoothies DOH and thought I ‘stuff the tea – let’s eat the whole ginger instead”!!

So that was it. I made a HIGH ginger smoothie straight away. I used a piece of ginger the size of a 50c piece and blended with 2 x oranges, 1 x tbsp of Vanilla Healthy Mummy smoothie mix and a handful of blueberries and I have done this 2-3 times a day for 3 days now and I can’t believe it but my headaches have significantly improved and I feel like running around doing a dance (but won’t as I don’t want to do anything to aggravate the headaches!!). Please note ginger is considered safe in pregnancy and tests have been done on a 4g consumption a day and 1 x tbsp is just over 1g.

The smoothies I make are very very gingery and you may not want to include as much as me – but the anti inflammatory action of the ginger is really helping and is PROOF that food can heal and I am so so happyl!

Why is ginger so good?

Science is finally catching up and researchers around the world are now discovering that ginger works wonders in the treatment of everything from cancer to migraines. Below are some of the areas it can help in – if you need any more reasons to add it into your smoothies

  • Morning sickness -  Several studies has concluded that ginger is just as effective as vitamin B6 in the treatment of morning sickness
  • Heartburn – Ginger has long been used as a natural heartburn remedy.
  • Pain & inflammation – One study showed that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is a powerful natural painkiller.
  • Cold & Flu – Ginger has long been used as a natural treatment for colds and the flu.
  • Migraine – Research shows that ginger may provide migraine relief due to its ability to stop prostaglandins from causing pain and inflammation in blood vessels

So there you have it. Ginger in smoothies is my new BEST FRIEND. Make it yours today too and start reaping the health benefits.

So glad that my little smoothie recipe has inspired this break through for you. I initially added the ginger and celery because I used to love celery and ginger in my juices and I thought what a great way to bulk up my smoothies with some super healthy low calorie fibre. I also drink ginger and lemon, and ginger and mint tea everyday. I find ginger just makes me feel ‘cleaned out’.

I am going to try this!! I suffer from migraines and panadol doesn’t even touch the sides. I am allergic to codeine and various other types of painkillers, and the only other medication that works is very expensive so i don’t like to use them a lot. I have minimised my headaches by reducing the processed sugar in my diet, but at the moment i have a hormonal headache which will likely turn into a migraine as they usually do. I am definitely going to get some ginger today and give it a go! thanks :)
