Hi, my name is Sandra Gee and I am one of your Winter Warrior Motivating Mums for June.
I am a 29yr old stay-at-home mum of my two girls, aged 1 and 2 and I am slowly winning the battle against my PCOS and insulin resistance. I have lost 23kg since April 2015 using the Healthy Mummy products and plansWinter Warrior Motivating Mum Sandra Is Winning Her Battle With PCOS
PCOS and insulin resistance makes weight loss harder but not impossible. I am here to share my story and the changes I have made to get this far. I was fifteen when I was first diagnosed and PCOS was still quite a new concept to most doctors I saw, but the one thing they all agreed on was that it was the cause of my obesity and that I had to lose weight to regain control of my body. They just never seemed to understand how hard it was to lose weight (I think quite a few of us sufferers have been there).

After discovering The Healthy Mummy when I was pregnant with my second I cooked up a storm to freeze meals and purchased the smoothies. With two kids 12 months apart, the smoothies were a blessing and boosted my milk supply enough to give me six weeks of exclusive breastfeeding AND a happy baby. For those who don’t know – PCOS, as a hormonal problem, may cause supply issues and I was one of those unlucky few no matter what I did to try and improve my supply (but that is a story for another time!).
After awhile of losing 0.5 to 1kg a month – yes, a month – my daughter began to reject the breast and so my doctor put me on metformin to control my insulin resistance – and hello weight loss! I am not saying metformin is a wonder drug, because it is far from it, but in addition to healthy eating and a lot of hard work it can aid weight loss and I was now losing 1.5-2kg a month. Winter Warrior Motivating Mum Sandra Is Winning Her Battle With PCOS
PCOS does funny things to the body and there is no one size fits all approach to dealing with it. I personally had high testosterone levels, which cause fast and excessive weight gain, increased hair growth (and not always where you want it), acne, secondary amenorrhea (I got a period about twice a year), and a very slow metabolism. Coupled with insulin resistance (a metabolic disorder that causes the overproduction of insulin and slows the metabolism even more and has you craving carbs at every minute of the day), I was losing my battle with the bulge and this is how I changed that.

  1. I found The Healthy Mummy, one of the only programs that focuses more on a balanced diet rather than the high carb, low fat mentality of others (a big no-no for PCOS)
  2. I did my research – I was serious about finally losing my weight and it had been a while since I had looked into any studies, so I sought the knowledge of google and peer reviewed journal articles.
  3. Changed my diet by tweaking the challenge meal plans to suit my needs:
    1. Increasing my protein portions and decreasing carb portions (the principals of what a diabetic should eat as PCOS and IR significantly increase the risks of getting diabetes, and to lower insulin levels naturally)
    2. Pairing carbs with protein at meals and snacks, as the protein enhances the digestion of carbohydrates
    3. Remove processed sugar from my life – I have noticed a huge difference in the way I feel by switching to natural sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, etc) and I had the greatest weight loss on the Sugar Detox themed 28 Day Challenge
    4. Cut down my dairy intake – I still use dairy milk in my coffee and baking etc, but I made the switch to almond milk for my smoothies. I found this significantly decreased bloat and the ill effects of taking metformin.

I am here to tell you to not lose faith. You can do this; it may be a life-long battle, but you can win the battle for your health and well-being. I certainly am not perfect and still have my cheat meals and slip ups here and there, but I know I can make it there. The love and support this company and all the amazing mums on the Facebook Support Group have and share with one another will give you the power to make it.
