Hi there wonderful Winter Warriors and welcome to the middle of the month!
The weather is icy, the food is warm and comforting and the time is here to get creative with moving your body indoors. I’m finding we are living off recipes in the Winter Cookbook and, with a clingy baby, the exercises from the Clingy Baby Exercise Book are getting used a lot! Winter Warrior Motivating Mum Laura Has Dumped Calorie Counting But Is Focused On Her Goals
This month started out with a goal of calorie count 6 days a week. Two and a half days is how long that lasted, that’s it.
To some people counting is the best tool and it’s the only way to stay accountable. For me it feels like a burden, an excuse to eat poorly for a whole day if I eat a mouthful of something that isn’t perfect. I become so focused on food as a number. I don’t listen to my body properly. I agonise over how many calories I’m eating. I become obsessive and get into the ‘all or nothing’ headspace that I’ve spent the best part of two years trying to train out of me. It just doesn’t work for me.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m changing the goals to something I know I can achieve.
To mindful eating. To drinking water first and if that doesn’t work eating food that packs a nutritional punch. I’ll ignore the numbers and focus on the wellness and on balance as that is something I feel like I can stick to.
Don’t ever be afraid to admit when something isn’t quite working and change tack to something you think can. There is never anything lost from trying a new strategy just as there isn’t anything lost from admitting when it doesn’t work for you and trying something different. Being healthy isn’t a quick fix and sometimes it’s trial and error to find something that works for you.
This winter sees some important events coming up that I’d love to look and feel pretty good for.
I have my daughter’s baptism coming up in a few weeks, a mid-winter family holiday planned in July and my daughter’s first birthday in August. I’m spoilt with things to use as motivation to stay focused.
I love having motivational carrots dangling in front of me, especially ones that are spread out like these are. These target dates help me stay focused on my healthy lifestyle, it keeps the fire burning and keeps health at the forefront of my mind.
I’ve always found I work the hardest and eat the best more often when I have something coming up that I want to look good for. Have a look at your calendar and see if there’s anything you can use as a motivational carrot, it really helps.
Until next time, keep smiling and stay healthy.
