These last two weeks have been a time for reflection and re-evaluation for me. As I approach one year of maintaining my 35kg* weight loss with The Healthy Mummy I have been remembering the many ups and downs along the way that have led me to where I am now.

Some of them were weight-related but most were mental. Weight loss is as much of a mental battle as a physical one and getting in the right head space for success is crucial. There are four areas that I have worked hard on during these last 18 months to ensure I kept seeing progress within myself.

The Scales:

At some point during weight loss we all have to stand on the scales. Seeing those numbers go up instead of down is a crushing moment and even more so when we have been working so hard.
There were times when I was stuck at a plateau for weeks and the scales were not budging. I was eating well, I was exercising and I was drinking water. I was doing everything I was supposed to be doing.
Yet, nothing. When those numbers stopped moving I had two choices. I could either give up and go back to my old habits which would essentially undo all my work to that point or, I could press on.

I knew that every healthy meal I ate and every workout I did was getting me closer to my goal, so I took progress photos and measurements each week.
I logged these details in my Lose Baby Weight so I could track my progress, no matter how small.
This meant that in times of a plateau I could still celebrate non-scale victories and reward my hard work.

The Cravings:

Before I began losing weight I was constantly drinking soft drinks and eating lollies. I craved the bubbles and sugar from mid-morning right up until bedtime.
When I made the decision to start losing weight I knew that I would have to give up these sweet treats if I was going to truly have success. One thing I didn’t anticipate was the cravings.
They were unrelenting! If I didn’t replace the junk with healthier alternatives then my cravings would beat me. I read through The Healthy Calorie Bible for some tips and I decided to give sultanas a try each time I craved something sweet.
Eighteen months on and I’m still eating sultanas whenever I feel like lollies. I also found that switching out sugar-laden cakes and cookies for healthier options I could keep in my freezer was a great option for when the cravings came lurking. Flourless Chocolate Cake, Weetbix Balls and the Healthy Hedgehog Slice are my trusted healthy treats to beat my cravings.

Support:

In an ideal world we would always be surrounded by people who want us to succeed and who motivate us to do our best.
Having a strong support network when losing weight is crucial but sadly that isn’t always the case. Family and friends can mean well, but sometimes what they think is motivating can have an opposite effect.
The Lose Baby Weight and Healthy Mummy Support Group page on Facebook has been integral to keeping me on track.
All of the members are there to share in my successes, offer advice during my low moments and all of the motivational posts really do get me moving and keep me accountable.
There are exercise challenges posted daily, reminders to drink water and constant inspiration for meals. I have even been able to connect with mums in my area for group exercise sessions.
I love knowing that I can have the support of likeminded women at the touch of a button.

Mindset:

This one is the ‘biggy’. This is the one that makes or breaks any success, not just weight loss. Getting into a positive frame of mind is a crucial element to staying on track.

Prior to finding Lose Baby Weight I tried to shed the kilos a few times but my head and heart just weren’t in it. I would tell myself that I was going to stop eating junk food, that I was going to stop drinking cola or that I was going to start exercising.
But I was lying and setting myself up for failure. There was a turning point, however, when I saw an unflattering photo of myself and I was gutted – how had I let myself get so big?
From then on I was focused. I set a main goal with mini goals along the way.
I read articles and blogs on the Lose Baby Weight website about nutrition and exercise so that I was fully equipped to get it right this time.
I was strict with myself in those first six months especially because I knew what I was like – if I allowed myself to ‘cheat’ I would fall back into old habits. I had a can-do attitude and I wasn’t going to stop until I reached my goal. And even then, I wasn’t about to stop.
My whole mindset has changed.
I can do the things I set out to do.
I can try new foods and exercises.
I can step outside of my comfort zone.
And most importantly I can succeed!
