We know that when you are a mum trying to lose pregnancy weight, it can be easy to fall off the wagon when you get busy or tired.
But if you’re serious about getting junk food out of your life and focusing on healthy eating, we’ve got some advice for you.
healthy_eatingHere are some tips from our brand new Junk Food Detox book (check it out here).
The book offers some practical advice as well as a 7 step plan for getting the junk food OUT and the good stuff IN.
It also contains a 7 day clean eating plan which is great to follow if you need some support to break the junk food cycle.
For many people, eating junk food is a bad habit. The good news though is that bad habits can be broken, if you’re willing to work at it.
When it comes to junk food vs what we like to call ‘real food’ there are a couple of key differences.

Why Real Food Is Better For You

  1. Natural foods (think fruit, veggies, nuts, fish, meat) are packed with nutrients, whereas junk food can contain preservatives and ingredients that don’t give us any nutrition.
  2. Real food will keep you satisfied for longer, whereas junk food satisfies you initially and then you seek out more and more soon after, when your blood sugar crashes.
  3. Fresh, good food will help get you off the junk food roller coaster as it will make you feel good and not encourage you to seek out high-fat or high-sugar ‘fixes’ to get you through the day
  4. You can end up eating less as natural foods will fill you up compared to junk food which can be hard to stop eating once you start (think how hard it would be to eat a whole packet of cashews compared to a whole packed of M&M’s).

The first step is finding your triggers for the junk food, and choosing the best way to combat them.
It’s quite common that you might consume junk food after a certain thing has happened. This is your ‘trigger’ that you need to identify.

Here are some examples:

  • healthy_eatingYou might feel that you need a biscuit after you have made a cup of tea
  • You might get drive through fast food after a visit to the in-laws out of town
  • You might always grab a chocolate bar at the checkouts after your weekly grocery shop

So to turn that around, you need to find a way to implement your new good habit after you do something.

You could decide to:

  • Always cut up an apple to have with your afternoon cup of tea; or
  • Throw a banana or some homemade popcorn in your handbag to eat on the way home from visiting relatives (or drive home a different way if that helps – seriously!)
  • Treat yourself to something you love from the supermarket that you can eat in the car on the way home that isn’t chocolate – it could be some marinated olives or a little tub of feta stuffed baby capsicums from the deli section.

Our Junk Food Detox eBook has many more examples and some great solutions that could help you ditch the junk.
Try writing down your triggers for eating junk food and then come up with some ideas for overcoming them.
