This article will discuss some important aspects of being a breastfeeding mother whilst the weather is hot.  Do baby’s get thirsty? YES!  Do they need water? NO!

If you are exclusively breastfeeding, which means not using formula and only breastfeeding, your baby does NOT need water to keep hydrated.

You may find on hot days, or if you have been sitting in air-conditioning, that your baby is a little more unsettled and demanding more breastfeeds.

It is normal for babies to be like this and it is ok to give them extra feeds.  You are not going to upset any routines.  Babies who are thirsty may only have shorter feeds.   breast feeding in hot weather

If you are mix feeding and your finding your baby is still demanding after feeds then you can add an extra 5 mls of cooled boiled water to your babies formula.  It is best however that you offer a breastfeed first.

Having a young baby during hot weather periods can also be exhausting so don’t forget to be kind to yourself and get some rest where you can.

Babies can become unsettled in hot weather and wish to be cuddled.  Your body is very clever and can act as a temperature regulator for your baby but it doesn’t stop you getting warm holding a baby.

Use cooled face washers, and have cool showers to cool yourself down.  Do not overdress yourself or baby.

Many parents worry that babies are not getting enough milk in hot weather.  Listen to your gut instinct and of course your baby!

If you have checked the nappy, checked your baby isn’t wearing too many clothes then check if your baby wants another feed.

Especially if your baby won’t settle in between feeds.  Your body tailor makes breastmilk to suit the needs of you baby, so you aren’t going to make your baby obese by feeding too much.

Baby’s can get dehydrated much quicker than adults in warm weather.  Keep an eye on your baby’s nappies.

They should have 5-7 wet nappies a day and be a clearer fluid, not concentrated and smelly.  Sometimes the first one in the morning is like this but other nappies should be normal.

What about Mum???

Mum needs to increase her fluid intake too!  Especially if you feel thirsty.  If you feel thirsty then you’re on your way to dehydration.   keeping hydrated whilst breastfeeding in hot weather

When you go to the toilet have a look at the colour of your urine.  If it’s a darker yellow colour then you need to drink more.

It is recommended breastfeeding mothers drink a minimum of 2 litres a day.  However people tolerate fluids different and some women will need a lot more to remain hydrated.

Soups, jellies and other fluid drinks contribute to fluid intake.

The Healthy Mummy Smoothies packed full of ice are a great way to increase fluid intake.  Remember caffeine is a dehydrator so it is best to have a glass of water when drinking coffee and teas.
