weight_loss_exerciseWalking is one of the most basic forms of exercise that there is. Everyone knows how to do it, and apart from a comfortable pair of running shoes or sports shoes, no special equipment is required.
Walking can be done at any time of day and in any location. There is no cost associated with walking, and you don’t have to have an instructor or go to any sort of class. Walking can be incorporated into any lifestyle and is a great way to lose weight and all over fat – including stomach fat (and if you want to see more specific and detailed advice on stomach fat click here).

10,000 step program

In order to get people thinking about how much they are walking, many fitness experts suggest setting a target of 10,000 steps per day and if you combine this with a healthy eating and weight loss plan such as the Lose Baby Weight plans you will see a steady and healthy weight loss over a number of weeks
This distance equates to around 8km, and many people find that once they start thinking about how much they are walking they are surprised at how much they are doing already.
Increasing the amount of walking and the distance is also relatively straightforward. Getting off the bus a couple of stops earlier, going for a walk in the park during a lunch break, walking to school with the kids rather than driving them in the car or walking to the shops can all make a huge difference.
By walking 10,000 steps per day, people will lower their risk of heart disease and will find that losing weight is easier as they are exercising more. For people who have a lot of weight to lose, or who are very seriously unfit may find that it is best to start with a lower target and then work up to the 10,000 steps over a few months.
And if you are already going for walks and are wanting to increase your intensity see our tips here

Measuring your steps

It can be very difficult to work out accurately how far you are walking each day but a pedometer is a great tool to wear to monitor your steps
The pedometer is fantastic as you can choose to do all of the 10,000 steps at once such as on a long walk, or you can calculate and monitor the 10,000 steps per day by the making up of several smaller journeys over the day.
These little devices measure the movement in the body and count every step you take. A pedometer is therefore the essential item for people trying to increase activity levels and lose some extra weight.

Incorporating walking into your lifestyle

New mums are the ideal candidates for using walking as a method of getting fit and healthy. Mothers often find classes impractical as there is nobody to mind the baby, and resent having to leave their baby to go and do exercise.
Walking while pushing a pram or carrying a baby in a sling is equally valid as walking alone, and getting out and about in the fresh air will have benefits for the baby as well as for the mother.
It can also be a great way to get to know other mothers and children as you are guaranteed to meet people while walking around the local streets or in the park. Walking with a friend or a group of friends and chatting as you go can make the walking far more enjoyable.
